Four days is enough for Kumaon Itinerary from Delhi if you accept one rule: two bases, not four. Every time you check out, you lose half a morning to packing, loading the car and hill traffic. This itinerary uses Bhimtal for the lakes and Kainchi Dham, then Mukteshwar for the Himalayan side, with Ramgarh on the drive between them.

It assumes you’re driving from Delhi, or taking a train to Kathgodam and hiring a car from there.

The 4-day plan at a glance

DayRouteDrive timeNight
1Delhi → Bhimtal7–8 hours (about 300 km)Bhimtal
2Kainchi Dham, Sattal, Naukuchiatal2–2.5 hours in short hopsBhimtal
3Bhimtal → Ramgarh → Mukteshwar2 hours plus stopsMukteshwar
4Mukteshwar sunrise → Delhi9–10 hoursHome

Day 4 is long. If you can, add a fifth day (see the 5-day version below).

Day 1: Delhi to Bhimtal

Leave by 5 am. That gets you past Ghaziabad and the Hapur bypass before the traffic, a dhaba breakfast at Gajraula around 7:30, and the start of the hills at Kathgodam by early afternoon. Bhimtal is only about 22 km beyond Kathgodam, so it’s the easiest first-night stop from Delhi.

Afternoon: check in, then walk the flat lakeside road to Victoria Dam for sunset.

Evening: early dinner and an early night. Tomorrow starts at 6:30.

Route options (via Rudrapur and Haldwani, or via Bazpur and Kaladhungi) are compared in our Delhi to Mukteshwar guide. The first half of that route is the same for Bhimtal.

By train instead? Take the morning Shatabdi to Kathgodam (arrives around midday) and a taxi to Bhimtal, about 45 minutes.

Day 2: Kainchi Dham, Sattal and Naukuchiatal

Day 2: Kainchi Dham, Sattal and Naukuchiatal
Day 2: Kainchi Dham, Sattal and Naukuchiatal

This is the day the itinerary is built around.

6:45 am: Leave Bhimtal for Kainchi Dham, about 20 km. Arriving before 8 am is the difference between a calm darshan and an hour in traffic. On weekends, police traffic plans can require you to park at Bhimtal Vikas Bhawan and take a shuttle, which is one more reason to go early. Our Kainchi Dham visit guide has the rules and parking detail.

9:30 am: Breakfast at a dhaba on the Bhowali road, then a stop at Bhowali’s fruit market if it’s summer.

11:00 am: Sattal. Walk the lake edge or kayak. Birders should really come at dawn, but a mid-morning walk still turns up plenty.

2:00 pm: Lunch, then Naukuchiatal for tandem paragliding (October to June, weather permitting) or a quiet boat ride.

5:00 pm: Back to Bhimtal. Boat to the island aquarium if the kids are still awake.

More on each stop in our things to do in Bhimtal guide.

Swap tip: if Day 2 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, swap Kainchi Dham to Day 3 morning (on the way to Ramgarh) and do Sattal and Naukuchiatal on Day 2.

Day 3: Bhimtal to Ramgarh to Mukteshwar

Check out by 9 am. The drive to Mukteshwar is only about 40 km, so the day is about the stops.

10:00 am: Ramgarh. Walk up to Tagore Top and spend an hour in the orchards. In April and May, the peach and plum trees are in blossom. In June and July, the fruit is on sale at roadside stalls. Our Ramgarh guide has more.

1:00 pm: Lunch in Ramgarh or on the road.

2:30 pm: Reach Mukteshwar and check in.

4:30 pm: Walk to Mukteshwar Dham Temple and Chauli Ki Jali for sunset.

Evening: dinner at your stay (Mukteshwar has few restaurants), then stargazing. On a clear moonless night, it’s one of the best skies in Kumaon.

Day 4: Mukteshwar sunrise and the drive home

6:00 am: Sunrise. On clear mornings between October and February, the Nanda Devi and Trishul peaks light up pink before the valley does.

8:30 am: Breakfast and check out.

9:30 am: Leave for Delhi. It’s 340–350 km and 9–10 hours with stops. You’ll reach Delhi late evening.

If the drive feels too long, break it with a night in Bhimtal or Haldwani, or use the 5-day plan.

The 5-day version (recommended)

Keep Days 1–3 as above, then:

  • Day 4: A full day around Mukteshwar. Bhalu Gaad waterfall walk in the morning, Sitla and Dhanachuli orchards, and Peora village in the afternoon. See places to visit near Mukteshwar.
  • Day 5: Sunrise, then the drive home.

This version turns the trip from “seeing Kumaon” into actually resting in it.

Family version: fewer drives

With kids under 8 or older parents, cut the hill driving:

  • Stay 3 nights in Bhimtal instead of 2, and do Mukteshwar as a day trip on Day 3.
  • Skip paragliding and the Bhalu Gaad hike; replace them with boating and the butterfly centre in Bhimtal.
  • Carry motion-sickness medicine. The Bhowali–Ramgarh–Mukteshwar stretch has the tightest bends of the trip.

Best time for Kumaon Itinerary from Delhi

Best time for Kumaon Itinerary from Delhi
Best time for Kumaon Itinerary from Delhi
  • October to mid-December: clearest mountain views and pleasant days. Best overall.
  • March to June: blossom and fruit season in Ramgarh, but weekend crowds at Kainchi Dham and Bhimtal. Avoid the week of 15 June (the Kainchi Dham mela).
  • July to mid-September: green but rainy, with occasional landslides. Keep a buffer day.
  • January to February: cold, quiet and possibly snowy in Mukteshwar. Check road conditions daily.

Budget pointers

  • Fuel and tolls from Delhi and back: plan roughly 750–800 km of driving in total, including local trips.
  • Stays: a private 3 BHK villa split between two families can cost about the same per person as two hotel rooms, and comes with a kitchen.
  • Food: eat local. A Kumaoni thali is cheaper and better than the pizza-and-pasta menus in Bhimtal cafés. Our Kumaoni food guide lists what to order.

FAQs

Four days is enough for Bhimtal, Kainchi Dham, Ramgarh and Mukteshwar if you use two bases. Add a fifth day to avoid a 9–10 hour drive on the last day.

Drive Delhi → Moradabad → Rampur → Haldwani → Kathgodam → Bhimtal on Day 1. From Bhimtal, go up via Bhowali and Ramgarh to Mukteshwar. This avoids backtracking.

Bhimtal is the better base. It’s closer to Kathgodam, Kainchi Dham, Sattal and Naukuchiatal, and much less crowded. Visit Nainital for an evening if you want the Mall Road.

Yes. Take the train to Kathgodam and hire a taxi for the whole trip. It’s easier than relying on shared jeeps, which stop running by late afternoon.

Go on a weekday morning, before 8 am. If your Bhimtal days fall on a weekend, move Kainchi Dham to the drive towards Ramgarh.
