Quick answer of Nainital Trip Cost in 2026: A 3-day, 2-night Nainital trip from Delhi costs roughly ₹5,000–8,000 per person on a budget, ₹8,000–15,000 mid-range, and ₹15,000 and up for a comfortable stay, according to a September 2026 cost guide by Triveni Cabs. For a couple, the biggest swing is the stay: a ₹1,500 room and a ₹6,000 villa change the total by ₹9,000 over two nights. Transport is the second biggest cost, and it’s the one most people underestimate.
We run villas and homestays around Nainital, in Ramgarh, Umagarh and Bhimtal, and “what will the whole trip cost?” is one of the first things guests ask. This guide is the breakdown we give them, with every number traced to a source you can check.

Stay, food and sightseeing ranges are from Triveni Cabs’ Nainital cost guide (updated 14 September 2026). Taxi tour fares are from Uttarakhand Cab’s April 2026 local sightseeing guide. Travel ranges are our estimates from those fares.
1. Getting there: the cost most people get wrong

Train + taxi
The New Delhi–Kathgodam Shatabdi (12040) leaves New Delhi at 6:20 am and reaches Kathgodam at 11:55 am. The return (12039) leaves Kathgodam at 3:20 pm and gets to New Delhi at 8:55 pm. It runs AC Chair Car and Executive class. Fares change with dynamic pricing, so check IRCTC for your date.
From Kathgodam, Nainital is about 35 km. You can take a shared taxi or a private one. A private taxi is the easy choice with luggage or kids.
Private cab from Delhi
Triveni Cabs lists a sedan at ₹11/km and an SUV at ₹15/km, which works out to about ₹6,600 return for a sedan and ₹9,000 for an SUV on the 300 km route. Split between four people, the sedan comes to ₹1,650 each. Tolls on the highway add around ₹400.
Your own car
Fuel for roughly 650 km return, highway tolls, and Nainital’s own entry toll. In April 2025 the Nainital municipality was collecting ₹110 per vehicle at Tallital and on the Kaladhungi road, with a higher rate approved but not yet in force (Daily Jagran). A taxi guide from April 2026 quotes about ₹150. Budget for the higher figure.
Parking is the hidden cost. You can’t park on the Mall Road. The district administration lists the Mallital Flats, Tallital, and the KMVN lot at Sukhatal as parking areas, and some hotels include parking. If your stay is in town without parking, add a daily parking charge to your budget and confirm it before you book.
2. Where you stay decides the budget
Three realistic options, with what each costs for a couple over two nights:
- Budget hotel or guesthouse in Nainital town (₹1,200–2,000/night): ₹2,400–4,000. Small rooms, often no parking, but walkable to the lake.
- Mid-range hotel (₹2,500–5,000/night): ₹5,000–10,000. Better rooms and sometimes a lake view. Prices jump in May, June and on long weekends.
- Private villa outside town (₹6,000–10,000/night for the whole villa): ₹12,000–20,000. This looks expensive for two. Split between two families, it can cost about the same per person as two hotel rooms, and you get a kitchen.
That last point is where the maths changes. Our Sukoon villa in Ramgarh, about 30–35 km from Nainital, is listed at ₹5,999 a night for a 2 BHK that sleeps 5–6, and Vanyara is ₹10,000 a night for up to four guests in a 3 BHK (₹1,200 per extra guest, up to nine). Six people in Vanyara works out to about ₹2,070 per person per night before taxes.
If you want to keep the stay cost down, read our guide to budget homestay in Nainital options, or compare a homestay in Nainital with hotels before you book.
On tax: since 22 September 2025, rooms priced up to ₹7,500 a night carry 5% GST, and rooms above that carry 18%. Always compare totals including tax.
3. Food: ₹500 to ₹3,500 a day
The range is wide because Nainital has everything from momo stalls to hotel restaurants. A rough guide per person per day:
- ₹500–900: dhaba thalis, momos and Maggi on the Mall Road, chai and a bakery snack.
- ₹1,000–1,800: one sit-down restaurant meal a day plus café stops.
- ₹2,000–3,500: hotel restaurants and better cafés for every meal.
Staying in a villa with a kitchen is the easiest way to save here. Cook breakfast and one meal, and eat out once. With a family of four over three days, that alone can save ₹3,000–5,000.
4. Sightseeing costs in Nainital

Most of what you’ll do in Nainital town is cheap. These are the typical charges listed in Triveni Cabs’ September 2026 guide:
| Activity | Approx. cost (per person) |
|---|---|
| Boat ride on Naini Lake | ₹210–310 |
| Snow View ropeway (return) | ₹300 |
| Eco Cave Gardens | ₹60 |
| Nainital Zoo | ₹100 (closed Mondays) |
| Lok Bhavan (formerly Raj Bhavan) | ₹50 |
Rates change, and boat charges in particular depend on boat type and duration, so treat these as a budget guide, not a price list.
Taxi tours
Uttarakhand Cab’s April 2026 guide says local fares are set by the Nainital Taxi Union and displayed at the taxi stands. For a hatchback:
- Himalaya Darshan (4–5 viewpoints): ₹1,500–2,000, about 3–4 hours
- Lake tour (Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal): ₹2,000–2,500, about 5–6 hours
- Mukteshwar day trip: ₹3,000–3,500
A family of four doing one taxi tour spends ₹400–600 each. That’s often better value than paying for separate activities.
Three sample budgets
These are for 3 days and 2 nights from Delhi, all costs included.
Couple on a budget: about ₹10,000–15,000
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Bus + shared taxi, both ways | ₹2,400–4,000 |
| Guesthouse, 2 nights | ₹2,400–4,000 |
| Food, 3 days | ₹3,000–4,500 |
| Boating, ropeway, Eco Cave | ₹1,100–1,400 |
| Extras | ₹600–1,000 |
Couple, mid-range: about ₹20,000–28,000
Train plus private taxi, a mid-range hotel with a lake view, one sit-down meal a day, a Himalaya Darshan taxi tour, and boating.
Family of four in a villa: about ₹28,000–38,000 total (₹7,000–9,500 each)
Private sedan from Delhi (about ₹6,600 + tolls), a 2–3 BHK villa near Nainital for two nights, cooking breakfast and dinner, one taxi tour and boating. The per-person cost here lands in the mid-range band while giving each family member far more space.
Six ways to cut your Nainital trip cost

- Avoid May, June and long weekends. Room prices and taxi demand both peak then. Mid-week in March, October or November is noticeably cheaper.
- Stay outside the town. Ramgarh, Bhowali and Bhimtal are 15–35 km away and often cheaper for the space you get. See what to do in each on our 2-day Nainital itinerary.
- Book direct. Platform service fees add up. Our guide to booking a homestay on Airbnb or direct explains what to compare.
- Share a taxi tour rather than booking separate rides.
- Cook at least one meal a day if your stay has a kitchen.
- Pick your season on purpose. Our guide to the best time to visit Nainital shows when prices and crowds drop.
How we put this together
We used the most recent published price sources we could find, checked them against each other, and noted where they disagree (the Nainital toll, for example, appears as ₹110 and ₹150 in two sources a year apart). We’ve marked our own estimates as estimates. Where we mention our own villas, the prices are from our property pages on saanjhstays.com, and we’ve said so.
Disclosure: Saanjh Stays runs villas and homestays near Nainital. We mention them where they’re relevant to the budget, but the cost ranges above apply to any stay.
FAQs
A 3-day Nainital trip from Delhi costs about ₹5,000–8,000 per person on a budget, ₹8,000–15,000 mid-range, and ₹15,000 or more for a comfortable trip. Stay and transport make up most of the difference.
The cheapest option is a bus or train to Haldwani or Kathgodam, then a shared taxi for the last 35 km to Nainital. The morning Shatabdi reaches Kathgodam at 11:55 am.
In April 2025 the toll was ₹110 per vehicle, collected at Tallital and on the Kaladhungi road, with a higher rate approved. A 2026 taxi guide quotes about ₹150, so budget for that.
A sedan costs about ₹11 per km, or roughly ₹6,600 for a return trip of around 600 km, plus about ₹400 in highway tolls. An SUV costs about ₹15 per km, or roughly ₹9,000 return.
Boating on Naini Lake costs roughly ₹210–310 per person, depending on boat type and duration. Check the rate board at the boat stand before you pay.
The Snow View ropeway costs about ₹300 for a return ticket, according to a September 2026 cost guide. Prices can change, so check at the ticket counter on the Mall Road.
Rooms in town can be cheaper per night, but villas in Ramgarh, Bhimtal or Bhowali often cost less per person for families or groups, because you share a whole house and can cook.
Nainital is cheapest mid-week in March, October and November, and in the monsoon months outside weekends. Prices peak in May, June, Christmas week and long weekends.
Budget ₹500–900 per person per day for dhabas and street food, ₹1,000–1,800 for one restaurant meal a day, and ₹2,000–3,500 for hotel restaurants throughout.
₹10,000 can just about cover a short budget trip for two from Delhi if you take the bus, stay in a guesthouse and eat at dhabas. For a mid-range hotel and a taxi tour, plan for ₹20,000 or more.
