Quick answer: The best time to visit Mussoorie is October to November, for clear skies, views of the snow peaks and fewer crowds, and March to June, for warm days when the plains are hot. December to February is for snow and the Winterline Carnival. July and August are the monsoon months, which are green and misty but come with landslide risk on the roads.

Saanjh Stay Mussoorie sits at about 2,000 m, around 35 km above Dehradun. That height is why it’s 10–15°C cooler than Delhi in summer, and why a sunny winter afternoon can turn to near-freezing by 6 pm. Here’s what each month actually feels like.

Spring: March and April

Spring is underrated in Mussoorie. The rhododendrons (buransh) flower on the ridges above Landour and along the Camel’s Back Road in March, days are 15–20°C and the town hasn’t hit summer crowds yet.

Weekday visits in March are about as quiet as Mussoorie gets outside winter. From mid-April, Delhi school holidays start filling up weekends.

Pack: light jacket for evenings; sunscreen for the day.

Summer: May and June

This is peak season. Mussoorie is 10–15°C cooler than Delhi, so everyone escapes here at once. Expect traffic jams on the Mall Road and on the road to Kempty Falls, full hotels on weekends, and higher room rates.

It’s still a good time to come if you plan around it:

  • Arrive on a weekday.
  • Do Kempty Falls and George Everest before 9 am.
  • Stay a little outside the Mall Road, where it’s quieter and parking is easier.

Monsoon: July to mid-September

The monsoon usually reaches Mussoorie in late June. July and August bring heavy rain almost daily, thick fog that rolls through town in minutes, and the fullest waterfalls of the year.

The catch is the roads. Landslides can block the Dehradun–Mussoorie road, the Kempty road and routes towards Dhanaulti for hours at a time. Views of the snow peaks mostly disappear behind cloud.

Who should come: people who want mist, rain on a tin roof and near-empty cafés, and who can keep a buffer day. Who shouldn’t: first-time visitors wanting views, or anyone on a tight schedule.

Pack: proper rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, shoes with grip, and a torch for power cuts.

Autumn: October and November

Our pick. After the monsoon washes the air clean, October and November have the clearest skies of the year. From Lal Tibba and Gun Hill, you can often see the Bandarpunch, Srikanta and Kedarnath ranges on clear mornings.

Days are 15–18°C, nights drop to 5–9°C, and outside the Diwali and Dussehra long weekends, crowds are light. It’s the best time for walks around Landour, Camel’s Back Road and the Jabarkhet reserve.

Pack: warm layers for evening; a proper jacket by late November.

Winter: December to February

Winter is cold, bright and quiet on weekdays, with a busy spike from Christmas to New Year.

  • Snow: Mussoorie can get snow from late December to February, usually on a few days a season rather than weeks. Higher areas like Lal Tibba, Char Dukan and the Landour side get it first. Dhanaulti, 25 km away and higher, gets it more reliably.
  • Winterline: on clear winter evenings, a thin line of orange light appears on the horizon at sunset, a rare atmospheric effect that Mussoorie is known for.
  • Winterline Carnival: held in the last week of December. The 2025 edition ran from 24 to 29 December, with food stalls, folk music and evening events.

Pack: thermals, a heavy jacket, gloves and a woollen cap. Roads can be icy in the mornings.

  • Leave Dehradun early. The road from Dehradun to Mussoorie (about 35 km) jams on weekend afternoons and on Friday evenings.
  • Book weekends early in May, June and the Christmas–New Year week.
  • Stay outside the Mall Road if you’re driving. Parking in the centre is limited and expensive in peak season.
  • Check road advisories in monsoon. The Uttarakhand Police and district administration post landslide closures on social media.
