From April to June, Nainital’s Mall Road can take 40 minutes to drive end to end. But drive 5 to 15 km out of town and the traffic disappears. You get quiet lakes with no boats on them, bird trails in oak forest, and villages where the loudest sound is someone chopping wood.
These are 10 offbeat places near Nainital, from a 15-minute drive to a proper day trip. We’ve grouped them by direction, so you can string two or three together without backtracking.

Close to town (under 12 km)

1. Tiffin Top (Dorothy’s Seat), but at dawn
Tiffin Top isn’t unknown. At 11 am it’s packed with pony rides and selfie queues. At 6:30 am, it’s empty. The 4 km walk from Nainital through pine and oak forest brings you to a rock ledge with a clear view over the lake and, on a good day, the snow peaks to the north.
That’s the offbeat trick for Nainital in general: the same places, at a different hour.
2. Sariyatal
Sariyatal is a small lake and waterfall about 5–6 km from Nainital, below the Kaladhungi road. After the monsoon the waterfall is at its fullest, and there’s a short walk down to the water. It’s the closest place to town where you feel you’ve left it.
What goes wrong: people skip it because it looks small on the map. Go in September, when the falls are full and the crowds have left.
3. Khurpatal
Khurpatal is a hoof-shaped lake about 10–12 km from Nainital, surrounded by terraced fields and a scattering of village houses. There’s no boating circus here, just a still lake that changes colour through the day. Locals fish in it, and the drive down gives some of the best views of step-farming in the district.
4. Kilbury
Kilbury is a patch of dense oak, rhododendron and pine forest about 12 km from Nainital on the Pangot road. There’s an old forest rest house and walking trails that stay cool even in May. It’s part of the same forest belt as Pangot, so combine the two.
5. Pangot
Pangot is a tiny village about 15 km from Nainital and one of the best-known birding spots in the western Himalaya. Birders come for species like the cheer pheasant, Himalayan griffon and many woodpeckers and laughingthrushes. Go at dawn with binoculars and a local guide. You’ll see ten times more than you would alone.
If you’re not a birder, Pangot is still a peaceful half-day in the forest, with views of Nainital’s hills from the back.
6. Gethia
Gethia is a quiet pine-forest area on the road between Nainital and Bhowali, around 8–10 km from town. There isn’t a single “sight” to tick off. It’s a place for a long walk, a picnic and a break from traffic.
Towards the lakes (20–30 km)

7. Sattal
Sattal is a cluster of connected lakes in thick oak forest, about 22 km from Nainital. It’s excellent for birdwatching early in the morning and for kayaking later in the day. Weekends after 11 am get busy with day trips, so arrive early.
8. Naukuchiatal
Naukuchiatal, about 26 km from Nainital, is a nine-cornered lake that’s calmer and cleaner than Naini Lake. It’s the main tandem paragliding spot in the area from October to June. Bhimtal is 5 km away if you want to add another lake. Our guide to things to do in Bhimtal covers both.
Uphill: orchards and ridge villages
9. Ramgarh
Ramgarh is about 30–35 km from Nainital via Bhowali, in the orchard belt of Kumaon. It has Tagore Top, where Rabindranath Tagore once stayed, apple and peach orchards, and snow-peak views on clear mornings. We’ve written a full list of the top things to do in Ramgarh, and a side-by-side Ramgarh vs Nainital comparison if you’re choosing where to base yourself.
Mukteshwar is another 25 km beyond Ramgarh. If you’re going that far, see our list of places to visit near Mukteshwar.
10. Kasar Devi
Kasar Devi is a ridge just outside Almora, about 65–70 km from Nainital (2.5–3 hours). It became famous in the 1960s and 70s when artists and writers settled there, and it’s still a slow place of cafés, ridge walks and one of the best sunsets in Kumaon. It’s a long day trip, so it’s better as an overnight.
Tips for visiting offbeat places near Nainital

- Fill fuel in Nainital or Bhowali. There are no pumps near Pangot, Kilbury or Khurpatal.
- Carry cash. UPI works in most places, but the signal drops in forest areas.
- Don’t drive forest roads after dark. The Pangot–Kilbury road is narrow and has wildlife crossings.
- Hire a local birding guide for Pangot and Sattal. It’s cheap and makes the trip.
- Take your litter back. Most of these places have no bins, and that’s partly why they still look the way they do.
Plan: two offbeat days around Nainital
