Quick answer Nainital 2-Day Itinerary: Two days is the right length for Nainital town. Spend day 1 around the lake: Naina Devi temple, a boat ride, the Mall Road and the Snow View ropeway. Spend day 2 on the hills: Tiffin Top at sunrise, Lok Bhavan (the old Government House), the zoo and Eco Cave Gardens. If you only have one day, do the lake in the morning and the ropeway in the afternoon, and skip everything that needs a taxi.

Most bad Nainital trips go wrong on order, not on places. People queue for boats at noon, reach the zoo on a Monday, and drive the Mall Road at 7 pm in May. This plan avoids all three.

Before you start: four things that shape the plan

  • The town has two ends. Mallital (north) has the Naina Devi temple, the Flats and most hotels. Tallital (south) has the bus stand. The Mall Road joins them along the lake, about 1.5 km.
  • The zoo is closed on Mondays, national holidays, Holi and Diwali, according to the Nainital district administration.
  • The Mall Road has vehicle restrictions. Outside vehicles can’t park on it, and entry is restricted in summer evenings (usually 6โ€“9 pm, per a 2026 local taxi guide). Plan to walk it.
  • Parking is at the Mallital Flats, Tallital and the KMVN lot at Sukhatal. If you’re staying outside town, take a taxi in or arrive before 9 am.

Day 1: Around Naini Lake

Day 1: Around Naini Lake
Day 1: Around Naini Lake

Naina Devi temple (7:00โ€“8:00 am)

Start at the north end of the lake. The Naina Devi temple sits on the shore at Mallital, next to the Flats, and is the reason the lake is considered sacred. Go early: by 10 am on weekends the queue reaches the road. Shoes come off at the entrance.

Boat ride on Naini Lake (8:30โ€“10:00 am)

Walk to the boat stand at Mallital. Naini Lake is about 1.4 km long and 463 m wide, with a maximum depth of about 24.6 m, so a full round on a rowing boat takes 30โ€“40 minutes. Pedal boats are cheaper and shorter. Expect roughly โ‚น210โ€“310 per person depending on the boat, and check the rate board before you get in.

Morning is better than afternoon for two reasons: the water is calmer before the wind picks up, and the queue is shorter.

Lunch in Mallital (12:30 pm)

The Mallital end has the most choice, from momos and thalis to sit-down cafรฉs. Eat before 1 pm on weekends.

Snow View ropeway (2:00โ€“4:00 pm)

The aerial ropeway leaves from the Mall Road and climbs to Snow View point, around 2,270 m. A return ticket costs about โ‚น300. On a clear afternoon from October to February, you can see the snow range to the north; there are telescopes at the top for a small fee.

What goes wrong: the ropeway queue can run an hour in May and June. Buy your ticket as soon as the counter opens if you’re visiting in peak season, and come back for the ride later.

Evening on the Mall Road (5:00โ€“8:00 pm)

Walk the Mall Road from Tallital back to Mallital as the lights come on. It’s flat, about 1.5 km, and the best way to see the lake at dusk. The Tibetan market near Tallital is good for woollens.

Day 2: The ridges above town

Day 2: The ridges above town

Tiffin Top at sunrise (6:00โ€“8:30 am)

Tiffin Top (also called Dorothy’s Seat) is a rock ledge on Ayarpatta hill, reached by a 4 km walk through oak and pine forest from the Mall Road area. At 6:30 am it’s empty. By 11 am it’s busy with pony rides. Carry water and a jacket, as mornings are cold even in May.

If walking 4 km uphill isn’t for you, ponies run from the base, or take a taxi part of the way.

Lok Bhavan, the old Government House (10:00โ€“11:30 am)

Built between 1897 and 1899 for the governor of the North-Western Provinces, this Gothic stone building is still the Uttarakhand governor’s residence and was known as Raj Bhavan until its recent renaming. The estate includes a golf course laid out in 1936. Visitor entry is by ticket (about โ‚น50) and guided tours run on set days, so check the current schedule before you go.

High Altitude Zoo (12:00โ€“1:30 pm)

The Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo sits at about 2,100 m, about 1 km from the bus stand, and is home to Himalayan species such as leopards and Himalayan black bears. The walk up from the road is steep. Entry is around โ‚น100. Closed on Mondays.

Eco Cave Gardens (2:30โ€“3:30 pm)

A set of small natural caves linked by tunnels and named after animals. Kids love it; adults with knee trouble should know some passages mean crawling. Entry is around โ‚น60.

Evening options

  • St John in the Wilderness: a Victorian church in the forest near Mallital, quiet and atmospheric in the late afternoon.
  • Himalaya Darshan drive: a taxi tour to 4โ€“5 viewpoints on the Kilbury road, about 3โ€“4 hours. Taxi union fares are around โ‚น1,500โ€“2,000 for a hatchback (2026). Do this instead of day 2’s afternoon if the sky is clear.

Keep everything walkable:

  1. 7:00 am: Naina Devi temple
  2. 8:00 am: Boat ride from Mallital
  3. 10:00 am: Breakfast, then walk the Mall Road to Tallital
  4. 12:00 pm: Lunch
  5. 1:30 pm: Snow View ropeway
  6. 4:00 pm: Eco Cave Gardens
  7. 5:30 pm: Sunset on the Mall Road

Skip the zoo, Lok Bhavan and Tiffin Top: each eats half a day once you add the climb.

Adding a third day

A third day lets you leave town. The two classic options are a taxi lake tour of Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal (about 5โ€“6 hours, โ‚น2,000โ€“2,500 for a hatchback) or a quieter day in the forests around Pangot and Kilbury. Our guide to offbeat places near Nainital covers both, and things to do in Bhimtal has the lake details.

Getting around Nainital

Walk. The Mall Road, the boat stands, the ropeway and the Naina Devi temple are all within about 1.5 km of each other along the lake, and walking is faster than driving in peak season. Cycle rickshaws run along the Mall Road for short hops, though evening restrictions apply in summer. For Tiffin Top, ponies run from the base. For anything outside town, such as Himalaya Darshan or the lake tour, use the taxi union stands, where fares are displayed. If you’re driving, park once at the Flats, Tallital or Sukhatal in the morning and leave the car there all day.

Where to base yourself

Where to base yourself
Where to base yourself

For this itinerary, staying in Mallital means you walk to almost everything. If you’d rather sleep somewhere quieter, a villa in Ramgarh or Bhimtal works with a taxi in each morning. We compare the areas in our guide to finding a homestay in Nainital near Mall Road versus outside it, and our villas in Nainital page lists our own options.

How we put this together

We built the order around opening days, queue times and walking distances, and checked closed days and fees against the Nainital district administration’s pages and 2026 price guides. Fees change, so we’ve given rounded figures. Where sources disagreed, we’ve used the more cautious number.

Disclosure: Saanjh Stays runs villas and homestays near Nainital. We mention them only in the “where to base yourself” section.
