Quick answer Travelling to Nainital with Your Dog: Yes, you can take your dog to Nainital, and most dogs love the cool air and forest walks. Drive rather than take the train, leave early to beat the heat on the plains, and book a stay that welcomes pets in writing. Once there, keep your dog on a short lead in town, skip the zoo and temples, and bring your dog indoors before dark: leopards live in the forests across Nainital district and are known to take dogs at night.

Two of our villas in Ramgarh welcome dogs, so this is the advice we give owners before they set off.

Getting to Travelling to Nainital with Your Dog

Drive: the easiest option

Nainital is about 300 km from Delhi, 7–8 hours by road. With a dog, plan for 8–9:

  • Leave by 5 am. The plains between Delhi and Haldwani get hot by late morning for most of the year, and cars heat up fast during stops.
  • Stop every 2–3 hours for water and a short walk. Gajraula is the usual halfway stop.
  • The last 35 km from Kathgodam are hairpin bends. Many dogs get carsick here. Ask your vet about anti-nausea medicine before the trip, and don’t feed a big meal in the hour before the climb.
  • Use a harness, seat belt clip or crate. Sudden braking on hill roads is common.

Train: possible but restrictive

Indian Railways’ rules for travelling with a dog are restrictive: pets generally travel either with you in a fully booked First AC cabin or coupe, or in a dog box in the luggage van. Not every train offers these options, and the popular Kathgodam Shatabdi has no First AC. For most owners, driving is simpler.

Weather: what your dog will feel

Nainital sits at about 2,084 m. India Meteorological Department averages show:

  • Summer (May–June): about 23 °C by day and 14–16 °C at night. Perfect for most dogs.
  • Monsoon (July–September): heavy rain (685 mm in July on average) and damp, which brings ticks and leeches on forest trails.
  • Winter (December–February): about 11–13 °C by day and 2–3 °C at night, with a recorded low of −5.6 °C.

Short-coated and small dogs need a jacket from November to February, especially in the evenings. Old dogs and flat-faced breeds (pugs, bulldogs) do best in spring and autumn, when there’s no heat on the drive and no hard cold at night. Our best time to visit Nainital guide has the full month-by-month table.

The leopard rule: indoors after dark

The leopard rule: indoors after dark
The leopard rule: indoors after dark

This is the single most important thing in this guide.

Leopards are found across the forests of Nainital district, including close to towns and villages. They take dogs, especially at night. In November 2025, CCTV at Betalghat police station in Nainital district recorded a leopard walking in through the open gate late at night and carrying off a dog, as India TV reported.

What we ask guests with dogs to do:

  1. Bring your dog indoors before dusk and keep it in overnight.
  2. No late-night walks on forest roads or village paths, even on a lead.
  3. Don’t leave your dog tied outside, even for a few minutes, after dark.
  4. Keep a torch handy and stay near lit areas if you must step out.

This isn’t meant to scare you. Most dog owners have a trouble-free trip; this is simply the one rule worth never breaking in the hills.

Other things that catch owners out

  • Street dogs. Nainital and nearby villages have many street dogs, and some are territorial. Keep your dog on a short lead and cross the road rather than walk through a group.
  • Monkeys. They’re common around temples and forest edges. Don’t carry food in your hand on walks.
  • Ticks. Check your dog after every forest walk, especially from April to October. Ask your vet about a tick preventive before you travel.
  • Cold floors and no heating. Bring your dog’s bed and a blanket; stone floors get very cold in winter.
  • Vets. The nearest cluster of vet clinics is in Haldwani, about 1.5 hours away. Save a number before you drive up.

Packing list for your dog

  • Vaccination record (especially rabies) and any medicines
  • Lead, harness and a spare lead
  • Bed or blanket, and a towel for wet paws
  • Food for the whole trip (your brand may not be available in town)
  • Water bottle and bowl for the drive
  • Dog jacket for November–February
  • Tick comb and preventive
  • Poop bags
  • A torch for dusk walks back

Day 1: Leave Delhi at 5 am, stopping at Gajraula and once more before Kathgodam. Climb the last stretch slowly, with windows slightly open for carsick dogs. Arrive by early afternoon, let your dog explore the garden, and keep the evening quiet and indoors before dark.

Day 2: Drive into Nainital by 8 am and walk the Mall Road along the lake while it’s still quiet. One person takes the boat ride if the operator won’t take your dog. Head up the Tiffin Top trail mid-morning for a shaded forest walk, with water for both of you. Lunch at a café with outdoor seating, then a slow afternoon back at your stay. Dog indoors at dusk.

Day 3 (optional): A morning forest walk around Pangot, Kilbury or Sattal, back before the afternoon cools.

Choosing a pet-friendly stay

Not every “pet-friendly” listing means the same thing. Before you book, confirm in writing:

  1. Are dogs allowed inside rooms, or only in the garden?
  2. Is there a pet fee or a size limit?
  3. Is the garden fenced or enclosed?
  4. Can the dog be left inside alone while you visit a temple or the zoo?
  5. Are there resident dogs on the property?

At Saanjh Stays, two of our Ramgarh villas welcome pets. Vanyara is a 4 BHK with a lawn and an open deck (₹10,000 a night for up to four guests, up to nine people), and Sukoon is a 2 BHK with a gazebo and firepit (₹5,999 a night). Both have private parking at the door, which matters when you’re unloading a dog after eight hours in the car. Vaayu Villa in 3 BHK doesn’t allow pets.

How we put this together

This guide combines our experience hosting guests with dogs at our Ramgarh villas, India Meteorological Department climate data for Nainital, the Nainital district administration’s visitor guidance, and news reports on leopard activity in the district. We’re hosts, not vets: check your dog’s health, vaccinations and travel medicine with your own vet before the trip.

Disclosure: Saanjh Stays runs Vanyara and Sukoon, the pet-friendly villas mentioned above.
